Trauma Therapy

Trauma Therapy

Holistic trauma therapy is an approach to treating trauma that addresses the whole person, taking into account their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs. This approach recognizes that trauma can impact every aspect of a person’s life and that healing requires a comprehensive approach.

There are three main types of trauma that patients may be dealing with:
  • Acute Trauma stems from a singular traumatic experience, such as an accident, natural disaster or sexual assault.
  • Chronic Trauma occurs when a person experiences multiple, long-term and/or prolonged traumatic events. Some examples include domestic violence, bullying, addiction, sexual abuse and long-term illness.
  • Complex Trauma is the result of multiple different traumatic experiences. Potential causes can include childhood abuse, domestic violence or civil unrest.
There are several types of holistic trauma therapy, including:

1. Somatic experiencing: This therapy focuses on the physical sensations associated with trauma and helps individuals process and release these sensations through gentle exercises and movements.

2. Mindfulness-based therapies: These therapies use techniques such as meditation and deep breathing to help individuals become more present and aware of their thoughts and emotions, reducing the impact of trauma on their lives.

Along with evidence-based interventions such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
  • Art therapy
The benefits of holistic trauma therapy include:

1. Improved emotional regulation: Holistic trauma therapy can help individuals develop better coping mechanisms and emotional regulation skills, reducing the impact of trauma on their lives.

2. Increased self-awareness: By addressing the whole person, holistic trauma therapy can help individuals gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their needs.

3. Greater resilience: Holistic trauma therapy can help individuals develop greater resilience, enabling them to cope with future challenges and stressors more effectively.

Overall, holistic trauma therapy offers a comprehensive approach to healing from trauma that can help individuals address the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of their lives.
